You might have that one person in your circle that seems to have more than 24 hours a day. Are they always getting stuff done? Do they have killer time management skills?
The thing is that they don’t have even a second more time than you do, they just manage their time better.
Now, I’m sure you’re probably heard that before and you’ve googled a few ways to dominate your time – but the secret with time management isn’t just calendar-blocking and to-do lists. It’s more about the consistent effort in getting your priorities in the “done-and-dusted” category.
Yet being busy doesn’t mean that you’re productive. It’s pivotal that you spend a huge chunk of your time on priorities. So, setting boundaries and saying “no” where necessary is important.
Use these guidelines to set priorities:
- Determine the urgent tasks that you will do immediately.
- These are your important tasks but are not urgent.
- What are your urgent, but unimportant tasks that you can delegate to someone else?
- These are neither urgent nor important tasks that you can do later.
Here are a few time management tips that will up your productivity faster than your kids can turn the house upside-down (a bit of an exaggeration there – there’s not many things that’s faster than that skill they possess).
Time management Tip 1: Track your time
Before you start filling out your calendar with tasks that you need to do, track the time that you spend on each task. This gives you a realistic view of how much time you really take to get things done. Then, set a limit for each task so that you’re fully focused completing it.
Once you know how long it takes you to finish tasks, set that as your time limit. As time goes by, try to beat your own time limit so that you can accomplish more during the day.

Time management Tip 2: Plan today for tomorrow
At the end of the day, take the last 15 minutes to plan the urgent things you need to tackle first, the next day.
These could be the tasks that you didn’t complete today, or it could be the tasks that are due earlier in the next day. The point is to know what you’re going to tackle the moment work time starts so that you don’t have to faff around trying to figure out where to begin.
Also, tackle your biggest task in the morning as you have the most energy at that time and you’re more likely to complete the task with enough energy.
Time management Tip 3: Set time aside to handle distractions
It’s so easy to get distracted with emails, messages, phone calls, and social media community building. Yet, these become distractions that leave you with half-completed tasks. Then, on top of that, current lockdown conditions have more people at home during the day. Setting time aside allows you to have a distraction-free zone and boosts your productivity.

Time management tip 4: Don't waste time
If you’re waiting for a meeting or in a waiting room at the dentist’s office use this time to either listen to a podcast, outline a blog post, or even check your financials. This helps you make the most of your time.
Yet, on the other hand, having a break in-between is never considered a waste of time. Only do this if you consistently make enough time for you as when you’re taken care of, you have the energy to improve your time management skills.
Time management tip 5: Telecommute
One thing that the economic crisis caused by the pandemic this year has taught many is to telecommute. Instead of a face-to-face meeting, connect online. Instead of heading each time out to the store, shop from your grocer online.
